Why they matter
Ryoma Sakamoto is one of the clearest examples of how Rise of the Ronin fuses history with systems. Conversations with him are not only flavor; they open bond missions, style opportunities, and story branches that change which allies stand with you later.
If you are playing a first run and want a readable path through Bakumatsu politics, investing in Ryoma’s bond early gives you both narrative context and mechanical payouts. Pay attention to gift preferences and mission order—bond rank gates the better rewards.
Do not treat him as a pure “good ending” button. The game’s faction system allows mixed loyalties. Use Ryoma’s route to understand reformist goals, then decide how much of that vision your ronin actually adopts.
Ryoma’s missions often sit near political crossroads rather than pure dungeon crawls. If you want reformist context without reading a textbook, finish his mid-rank bond missions before the late Yokohama–Edo transition so the later cutscenes still have mechanical payoffs.
Gift only when you already plan to visit him that session. The better use of inventory space early is repairing the weapons you Counterspark with daily; bond gifts matter most when a rank is one mission away from a style unlock.
Bond availability and exact rewards depend on story flags and rank. Check in-game bond screens after major missions.
